Shopify SEO Checklist

This Shopify SEO checklist shows where to improve products and collections and how to verify the platform’s generated SEO output. Check public availability, edit useful content and search fields, then inspect sitemaps, canonicals, theme integrations and Markets. The menus below follow current official documentation; confirm the controls and output in your own store before changing shared settings.

16 checks

Start with the correct public Shopify store

Check store access and publication before editing content that search engines cannot reach.

Check store access and Online Store publication

Make intended public pages available.

Use this for: Launch-ready or existing public Online Store channels.

In Shopify admin, open Online Store and check the access-mode control. A public launch uses Public; first-time launch can show Launch store after required setup. Keep an unfinished or intentionally private store restricted. For a product, open Products → the product and confirm its intended status and Online Store publishing availability; market catalog availability can impose another restriction. Test its public URL while logged out.

Example

Illustrative fault: the store is public, but a copied product is still Draft or not published to Online Store. Editing its SEO title will not make that page publicly available.

  1. Confirm the store is meant to be public.
  2. Check store access and the product’s channel/status.
  3. Open the page in a logged-out session.
More help and optional notesHigh · Store owner

Before you begin: Authorized Shopify access, intended launch state and current product channel/market availability.

PassIntended public products can be accessed in their intended market.
FailPrivate mode, draft status or channel/market restrictions unexpectedly hide the page.

If it fails: Correct the specific publication setting once launch is authorized.

Retest: Retest the public address without an admin preview session.

Not applicable: The store or item is intentionally private or unpublished.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

No result recorded yet.

Changing this result updates your checkmark and progress immediately. Notes are optional.

Work through the Shopify collection SEO checklist

Build collections that fit the assortment, set their SEO fields and give customers a route to them.

Match collection sources and description to a shopping need

Keep the collection promise and product grid aligned.

Use this for: Collections intended as public shopping destinations.

Open Products → Collections and choose the collection. Review its title, description and product sources or selection conditions. If conditions are used, check whether matching any or all conditions gives the intended range. Preview the assigned template to see whether the description actually displays. A collection created for an internal admin workflow need not become a search landing page.

Example

Illustrative “Waterproof Panniers” collection: a loose rule matching waterproof OR bicycle can pull unrelated items. Use the appropriate inclusion logic and verify the actual grid rather than trusting its name.

  1. Review the title, description and inclusion sources.
  2. Correct conditions or explicit product selection.
  3. Preview the live collection and its assigned template.
More help and optional notesHigh · Merchandiser

Before you begin: Products → Collections access and a real product inclusion rule for the collection.

PassThe collection contains the intended products and useful visible context.
FailSelection rules pull unrelated items or the template hides needed guidance.

If it fails: Correct the collection source rules or template section.

Retest: Reopen the collection and inspect items that should and should not qualify.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

No result recorded yet.

Changing this result updates your checkmark and progress immediately. Notes are optional.

Edit the collection’s search engine listing

Give the collection a clear title and description.

Use this for: Public collections.

In Products → Collections → your collection, find Search engine listing and choose its edit icon. Set Page title and Meta description to describe the real selection. Review URL handle before publishing; the handle controls part of the address, not Shopify’s reserved route structure. Preserve established handles unless a justified move has a redirect plan. Preview text is only a preview of possible search appearance.

Example

Illustrative Page title: “Waterproof Bicycle Panniers | Example Cycle Store.” Meta description: “Compare capacities and rack mounts across our waterproof pannier range,” only when those comparisons are available.

  1. Open the collection’s Search engine listing.
  2. Write accurate title and description fields.
  3. Save and check the rendered title and description.
More help and optional notesHigh · Store editor

Before you begin: The collection’s Search engine listing fields, actual assortment and any existing-handle redirect plan.

PassThe published collection metadata matches its actual range.
FailCopy duplicates an unrelated collection or a handle change strands old links.

If it fails: Correct the fields and complete any necessary redirect.

Retest: Use View page source to find title and name="description"; test any old URL.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

No result recorded yet.

Changing this result updates your checkmark and progress immediately. Notes are optional.

Link published collections through Content → Menus

Make useful collections easy to find.

Use this for: Collections that customers should reach through navigation.

Ensure the collection is available on Online Store, then go to Content → Menus. Choose the active store menu, add or edit an item and select the collection as its destination. Use a descriptive label and save. Open the published header and mobile menu because the theme determines which menu and nesting levels appear.

Example

Illustrative menu: Cycling → Bags → Panniers opens the published pannier collection, rather than a pasted obsolete URL or an unpublished copy.

  1. Confirm collection availability.
  2. Select its destination in the active menu.
  3. Save and test desktop and mobile links.
More help and optional notesHigh · Store editor

Before you begin: A published collection, Content → Menus access and the active theme’s menu assignment.

PassThe visible menu reaches the intended collection and its products.
FailThe edited menu is unused or the destination is missing/unpublished.

If it fails: Correct the active menu assignment or resource destination.

Retest: Click through the public navigation while logged out.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

No result recorded yet.

Changing this result updates your checkmark and progress immediately. Notes are optional.

Work through the Shopify product SEO checklist

Edit product facts, search fields and media, then check the actual variant a shopper receives.

Complete product facts and the individual SEO fields

Explain the item and its buying constraints.

Use this for: Individual product pages.

Open Products → the product. Improve Title and Description with verified uses, specifications, compatibility and included parts. Use suitable metafields for repeatable specifications and connect them in a compatible theme so they are visible. In Search engine listing, choose the pencil icon and edit Page title and Meta description separately from the product name.

Example

Illustrative product: “Blue 20 L Rear Pannier” explains rack compatibility and whether one bag or a pair is included. Its SEO title can add the store name without claiming an unverified waterproof test.

  1. Update verified product facts and useful sections.
  2. Set the product’s SEO title and description.
  3. Save and inspect the public product page.
More help and optional notesHigh · Catalog editor

Before you begin: Product editing permission, verified specifications and any theme-connected metafields.

PassImportant buying information and accurate metadata appear publicly.
FailKey specifications exist only in admin or unsupported claims appear in copy.

If it fails: Correct catalog fields and connect missing metafield output.

Retest: Read the published details and source metadata for the intended item.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

No result recorded yet.

Changing this result updates your checkmark and progress immediately. Notes are optional.

Prepare product media and edit its alt text

Show the correct item clearly on every screen.

Use this for: Shopify product and collection media.

Resize and compress accurate product photos before upload while retaining needed detail. Open the product’s media thumbnail to edit it; in the media editor’s Edit information area, set Alt text and save. Review AI suggestions rather than accepting an incorrect color or object. Check how the theme crops collection cards and whether product variants show the appropriate image.

Example

Illustrative alt: “Blue rear pannier with its roll-top closure open.” The collection-card crop should not remove the mounting hooks when those are the photo’s useful detail.

  1. Prepare and upload accurate sized images.
  2. Open each informative image and set its alt text.
  3. Inspect product and collection views at phone width.
More help and optional notesHigh · Catalog editor

Before you begin: Accurate licensed product images, display/crop requirements and Shopify media-editor access.

PassMedia is accurate, readable, appropriately sized and meaningfully described.
FailWrong-variant images, misleading alt text or harmful crops remain.

If it fails: Replace or reassign media and correct the alt/crop.

Retest: Inspect the published image and its actual alt attribute.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

No result recorded yet.

Changing this result updates your checkmark and progress immediately. Notes are optional.

Test Shopify variant selection and availability

Keep shareable product links faithful to the offer.

Use this for: Products with variants.

In Products, review the product’s variants, option values and current price/availability. On the storefront, select an option, copy its resulting link and open it in a fresh session. Compare image, selected option, price and stock. For a standard theme, a variant query may represent a selection on the same product rather than a separate SEO landing page; inspect the theme’s canonical and structured data before changing that model.

Example

Illustrative test: a ?variant= link for the blue pannier should reopen the blue selection with the right offer. A zero-stock option must not falsely claim immediate availability.

  1. Review variant catalog fields.
  2. Select and reopen real storefront variant links.
  3. Compare offer, image and canonical behavior.
More help and optional notesHigh · Catalog editor and developer

Before you begin: Current variant catalog fields and public URLs for the intended market.

PassA direct variant link reproduces the intended item and truthful offer.
FailThe reopened selection or structured offer points at another variant.

If it fails: Correct catalog associations or the theme/app selector integration.

Retest: Retest the affected variants without placing an order.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

No result recorded yet.

Changing this result updates your checkmark and progress immediately. Notes are optional.

Work through the Shopify technical SEO checklist

Check generated output before customizing it; preserve platform behavior where it already fits the store.

Inspect Shopify’s generated sitemap

Check discovery without adding an unnecessary generator.

Use this for: Public Shopify Online Store domains.

Open /sitemap.xml on the public store’s domain and follow its product and collection child sitemaps. Compare a published intended product and collection with the entries. Shopify generates and updates these files; correct publication, catalog or index settings behind a missing URL rather than treating this as a manually uploaded XML file. Submit the actual sitemap in the verified Search Console property. Private mode prevents normal public access.

Example

Illustrative finding: a product is missing because it is not published to Online Store. Fix the intended publication setting, then reopen the generated product sitemap.

  1. Open the root and relevant child sitemaps.
  2. Compare intended published URLs.
  3. Submit the active sitemap and inspect processing.
More help and optional notesHigh · Store owner

Before you begin: The public store domain, intended product/collection URLs and verified Search Console access.

PassGenerated sitemap entries reflect the intended public pages and can be processed.
FailThe sitemap is inaccessible or important intended pages are unexpectedly absent.

If it fails: Resolve the publication or access cause before adding any app.

Retest: Reopen the sitemap and review Search Console’s Sitemaps result.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

No result recorded yet.

Changing this result updates your checkmark and progress immediately. Notes are optional.

Check product and collection-path canonicals

Find altered theme metadata before changing URL rules.

Use this for: Stores with standard or customized product URL paths.

Open the product through its direct /products/ path and, if used, through a collection path. Use View page source and search for rel="canonical". Compare the destination with the intended preferred product URL. Shopify themes can use the canonical_url Liquid object; a developer should inspect the shared head output and any SEO app when conflicting tags appear. Do not paste a fixed product address into every template.

Example

Illustrative fault: /collections/panniers/products/blue-pannier points to an unrelated item after a custom head edit. Restore the correct dynamic canonical output and test another product.

  1. Open actual alternate product paths.
  2. Read rel="canonical" in both page sources.
  3. Trace conflicts to the theme head or app.
More help and optional notesHigh · Shopify developer

Before you begin: Direct and collection-path product URLs plus developer access to the responsible theme/app output.

PassDeclared canonicals match the actual product and locale strategy.
FailA missing, duplicated or unrelated canonical changes the intended preference.

If it fails: Repair dynamic metadata generation in a tested theme copy.

Retest: Inspect direct, collection-path and localized output after release.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

No result recorded yet.

Changing this result updates your checkmark and progress immediately. Notes are optional.

Check filters, pagination and robots rules together

Preserve product discovery while controlling unnecessary URLs.

Use this for: Stores using collection filters, sorting or pagination.

If using Shopify Search & Discovery, open Apps → Search & Discovery → Filters and review meaningful filter sources; the theme must support them to display. Inspect actual filtered and paginated URLs on the storefront and open /robots.txt. Defaults suit most stores. Customize robots.txt.liquid only for a diagnosed need with a qualified developer, preserving Shopify’s dynamic defaults. Do not block useful page-two product discovery or confuse robots blocking with noindex.

Example

Illustrative fault: a custom blanket query-string block catches ?page=2 as well as sorting URLs. Narrow the rule and verify that later products remain reachable through real links.

  1. Inspect actual filter and next-page links.
  2. Compare them with live robots directives and canonical output.
  3. Change only a verified conflicting rule or template behavior.
More help and optional notesHigh · Shopify developer

Before you begin: Real filter/page-two URLs, live robots output and a developer for any justified template customization.

PassUseful collections and later products remain reachable while low-value URL growth is controlled.
FailBroad custom rules block products or interaction-only loading hides later items.

If it fails: Repair the specific filter/pagination implementation or scoped robots customization.

Retest: Open representative filtered, unfiltered and page-two URLs; recrawl the product path.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

No result recorded yet.

Changing this result updates your checkmark and progress immediately. Notes are optional.

Create redirects for justified handle changes

Preserve useful old product and collection links.

Use this for: Necessary Shopify URL moves and relevant retired-product replacements.

When a published handle must change, review Shopify’s option to create a redirect. For an explicit mapping, open Content → Menus → View URL Redirects → Create URL redirect, then enter the old path and relevant new path. Shopify’s standard redirect tool does not override an active page and excludes reserved paths. Test each important locale and parameter case rather than assuming one rule covers everything.

Example

Illustrative mapping: an old /products/canvas-pannier path moves to the genuinely replacing product. Do not route all discontinued accessories to the homepage or expect a rule to override a still-active source page.

  1. Confirm the move and relevant replacement.
  2. Create or verify the redirect in URL Redirects.
  3. Test old paths and update internal links.
More help and optional notesHigh · Store owner and developer

Before you begin: A justified old-to-new URL map and Content → Menus → URL Redirects access.

PassOld moved URLs reach the relevant final destination without loops.
FailThe source is still active, reserved or mapped to an irrelevant destination.

If it fails: Correct the source-state or mapping; keep an appropriate not-found result when no relevant replacement exists.

Retest: Use browser Network after reloading to check redirect status and final page.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

No result recorded yet.

Changing this result updates your checkmark and progress immediately. Notes are optional.

Work through the Shopify theme SEO checklist

Check what the active theme and installed apps actually render, including headings, product data and performance.

Inspect template headings and product structured data

Keep page meaning and offer markup accurate.

Use this for: Active Shopify theme templates and product integrations.

Open Online Store, find the theme and choose Edit theme. Preview a product and collection template; review the visible main title and section headings. Test a public product in the Rich Results Test and compare offer fields with its current catalog data. Themes and apps can both emit markup, so identify the owner of conflicting output. Test code changes on a theme copy before publishing.

Example

Illustrative outline: H1 “Blue Rear Pannier”; H2 “Rack compatibility”; H2 “Dimensions.” Its Product offer must use the visible variant’s price and availability; do not invent a rating because a tool mentions reviews.

  1. Preview representative templates.
  2. Inspect heading structure and validate product markup.
  3. Fix the responsible theme or app output.
More help and optional notesHigh · Theme developer

Before you begin: Theme-copy preview access, representative product/collection URLs and verified offer data.

PassTemplates convey a clear hierarchy and truthful product data.
FailA shared template hides essential content or conflicting schema describes the wrong offer.

If it fails: Correct the relevant template block, metafield connection or markup integration.

Retest: Retest multiple products and a collection after the theme change.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

No result recorded yet.

Changing this result updates your checkmark and progress immediately. Notes are optional.

Review app embeds and mobile performance

Remove a demonstrated regression without breaking needed features.

Use this for: Themes using app blocks, embeds or injected code.

In Online Store → your theme → Edit theme, inspect App embeds and the app blocks on affected templates. Identify unused or duplicate functionality before changing it. Use PageSpeed Insights and a phone-width journey to find specific slow resources or layout shifts. Some apps add custom theme code, so switching an embed off may not remove every script; involve the developer when needed.

Example

Illustrative regression: a promotional app overlays the variant selector and shifts the product image. Change its placement or disable the unnecessary embed in a theme preview, then confirm useful tracking and store features still work.

  1. Inventory relevant embeds, blocks and custom integrations.
  2. Test the affected template and interaction.
  3. Make a narrow reversible change and compare output.
More help and optional notesMedium · Store owner and developer

Before you begin: Theme App embeds/app-block access, an integration inventory and safe preview testing.

PassKnown app regressions are resolved while required functionality works.
FailScripts or overlays break the journey, or cleanup removes a needed feature.

If it fails: Restore needed behavior and fix the actual app integration.

Retest: Retest at phone width without completing a real purchase; compare diagnostic runs.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

Work through the Shopify international SEO checklist

Connect actual market availability, localized content and generated alternate-page output.

Configure real market URLs and localized content

Give supported audiences a usable local storefront.

Use this for: Stores using multiple Shopify markets or languages.

Add the required language in Settings → Languages, then open Markets → the intended market and review Domain / language. Configure a supported distinct URL structure when that market needs a separate locale. Review translations and market-specific product availability, pricing and shipping with the responsible team. Currency switching alone does not create a separate localized URL.

Example

Illustrative Canadian French storefront: its French product content, Canadian catalog availability and CAD offer must agree. A translated menu around an English-only product description is incomplete.

  1. Verify the market’s real offer.
  2. Review language and Domain / language configuration.
  3. Localize the page and test market-specific availability.
More help and optional notesHigh · International commerce owner

Before you begin: Approved market availability, language review and access to Markets, Languages and catalogs.

PassEach intended locale has the correct content, URL and supported offer.
FailLanguage, market catalog and visible currency describe different customer experiences.

If it fails: Correct the market assignment, translation or catalog fields.

Retest: Open a localized product directly and follow a safe non-purchase journey.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

No result recorded yet.

Changing this result updates your checkmark and progress immediately. Notes are optional.

Verify automatic hreflang and locale canonicals

Avoid duplicate locale markup and unsupported alternate targets.

Use this for: Shopify stores with distinct market/language URLs.

Open the public source of corresponding locale products and search for hreflang and rel="canonical". Shopify’s automatic hreflang depends on market and language configuration with distinct locale URLs. In Online Store → Preferences → Social sharing image and SEO, review Automatic hreflang tags if a theme or app also emits them. Keep one complete implementation; do not switch off automatic tags without a working replacement.

Example

Illustrative check: English and French versions link back to one another and each identifies the intended locale canonical. A second app-generated set using old domain assignments should be corrected, not ignored.

  1. Inspect both locale page sources.
  2. Compare tags with actual market URLs and publication.
  3. Resolve duplicate implementations at their source.
More help and optional notesHigh · Shopify developer and SEO owner

Before you begin: Published equivalent locale URLs, market configuration and knowledge of any custom hreflang integration.

PassAlternate and canonical output matches the published locale page family.
FailTags point to old, unrelated or inaccessible market versions.

If it fails: Correct Markets configuration or the overlapping app/theme implementation.

Retest: Inspect reciprocal output and final destinations after the change.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

Repeat a Shopify SEO audit after store changes

Use a small but representative set of pages to catch template and catalog regressions.

Retest products and collections after imports or theme releases

Catch a shared defect before treating every page separately.

Use this for: Existing Shopify stores after material changes.

After a catalog import, theme release, app change or market update, sample the affected collection, product, variant and unavailable-item states. Compare public output with admin settings. In Search Console, inspect unexpected Page indexing exclusions and review Performance for the relevant URL groups over comparable periods. A stored SEO field is not proof that the theme renders it or Google has recrawled it.

Example

Illustrative release check: a new theme drops collection descriptions and changes product canonical output. Fix those shared templates, then inspect the same samples and an unchanged control page.

  1. Choose changed templates and catalog states.
  2. Compare public output with saved fields and reports.
  3. Prioritize the shared cause and repeat the same tests.
More help and optional notesHigh · SEO owner

A useful result, every time

Check a task. Choose a result.

This is a manual SEO workflow. It helps you decide what to investigate and keep a usable record. It does not crawl your website or verify your answers automatically.

  1. Choose your scope. Pick the relevant task group and representative pages you are authorized to inspect.
  2. Run the stated check. Follow the steps, then choose your result. Click the square for Pass, or use the result menu for another status. You do not need to type anything.
  3. Assign the next action. Fix a problem when you can, or ask the right person for help. Optional notes can remind you what to do next. Check the result again after a fix.

What your progress means

Review progress counts passes and failures against applicable checks. Failed work still counts as reviewed. Blocked and untested checks remain unfinished. This is not an SEO score.

Untested

Pass
You checked it and it works as described.
Fail
You checked it and found something to fix.
Blocked

Export CSV downloads the checks currently shown and any optional notes. Print expands the instructions for that view. Saved results stay in this browser; there is no account sync.

Apply the workflow

What should you check when Shopify handles a feature automatically?

Read the generated output and the settings that supply it before adding another app or overriding the theme.

Where do you edit Shopify homepage SEO?

Open Online Store → Preferences and use the Social sharing image and SEO section for the homepage title and meta description. Product and collection search fields live on their own records. A store-wide homepage title does not replace those page-specific fields.

Illustrative homepage title: “Bicycle Bags and Touring Accessories | Example Cycle Store,” when that is the real assortment. Save, open the public homepage, use View page source and search for title and name="description".

Do you need an app for every Shopify SEO task?

Shopify already generates core discovery output, and standard themes use metadata objects such as page_title, page_description and canonical_url. Check the current output before buying an app that duplicates it. Apps can be useful for a specific requirement, but their settings and theme integration still need verification.

Built-in behavior is not a guarantee that every custom theme or external storefront implements it correctly. If you cannot find a control described here, check your store’s interface and permissions rather than guessing a replacement setting.

How do you inspect the published Shopify result?

Open the public URL without an admin preview session. Use View page source to search for title, name="description", name="robots", rel="canonical" and hreflang as relevant. Browser Developer Tools → Network → the document request shows Status and response headers. Read the rendered Elements view or URL Inspection when JavaScript changes essential content.

No hands-on admin walkthrough or original screenshot of your store is implied by this documentation-based checklist. Theme and app behavior must be verified on the actual installation.

Continue with the right store workflow

Use the ecommerce checklist to plan the assortment and store-wide content decisions behind these Shopify settings. Use the audit when you need to diagnose an existing store problem.

A clear process, with honest limits.

Follow the steps, choose the result that matches what you found, and check again after changes. Notes are optional. A completed check does not guarantee indexing, traffic or rankings. How the checklists work.
