International SEO Checklist

An international SEO checklist helps you build and check pages for different languages and countries. Start with markets you can serve, give each locale a stable URL, localize the complete page, and verify alternate-page relationships before monitoring search results by market.

13 checks

Build your international SEO checklist by country

Choose markets you can actually serve, then decide which country differences need separate pages.

Match target countries to real service availability

Choose useful market coverage.

Use this for: Every proposed country audience.

List the countries in your expansion plan beside the products, services and support you can genuinely provide there. Check delivery restrictions, contact routes and fulfillment with the responsible team before commissioning pages. A country receiving visits is a research lead, not proof that your offer is available.

Example

Illustrative store: Canadian delivery is supported, but installation is available only in Ontario. The Canadian product page must not promise nationwide installation.

  1. List proposed markets.
  2. Confirm availability and support with operations.
  3. Remove unsupported promises from the page plan.
More help and optional notesHigh · Marketing and operations

Before you begin: A proposed market list and current delivery, service and support limits from operations.

PassEach target market has an accurate offer and a responsible local reviewer.
FailPages promise services or delivery the business cannot provide.

If it fails: Narrow the offer or hold that market page until operations can support it.

Retest: Review the planned page against the approved service limits.

Not applicable: The site serves one market and has no country-specific offers.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

Changing this result updates your checkmark and progress immediately. Notes are optional.

Choose stable URLs for each locale

Give each locale a reachable address.

Use this for: Sites publishing more than one language or regional version.

Choose a country domain, subdomain or subdirectory structure that your team can maintain. Use distinct URLs for published language versions rather than changing the same address only through a cookie. For an existing site, preserve workable URLs; plan redirects and updated links before moving them.

Example

Illustrative structure: /en-ca/repair-guide/ and /fr-ca/guide-reparation/ identify separate Canadian language versions. A language-wide /fr/ guide may be enough when the advice is genuinely identical across markets.

  1. Compare maintenance and market needs.
  2. Assign a durable URL pattern.
  3. Map old addresses before any move.
More help and optional notesHigh · Developer and SEO owner

Before you begin: The current locale URL map, CMS routing capabilities and access to existing URL/redirect inventory.

PassEach required locale has a stable public URL and justified targeting.
FailLanguage changes only inside a session or a redesign strands existing addresses.

If it fails: Create persistent locale routes and a tested migration map where needed.

Retest: Open each address in a fresh browser session and check planned redirects.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

Research search wording within each market

Use the language customers actually search.

Use this for: Each target language-market pair.

Give a fluent local reviewer a short list of real products, services and customer questions. Search the local wording with the intended market and language settings, then compare the kinds of pages returned. Use country-filtered Search Console queries when history exists. Keep the search context beside any estimates; a literal translation may target the wrong need.

Example

Illustrative research question: a UK cycling shop would test “bicycle tyre repair” while its US team tests “bicycle tire repair.” These examples are wording hypotheses, not measured search-volume claims.

  1. Gather local customer wording.
  2. Inspect results in the target language and market.
  3. Assign relevant phrases to existing or planned pages.
More help and optional notesMedium · Local editor

Before you begin: A fluent local reviewer, actual buyer questions and target-market search context; Search Console if history exists.

PassThe chosen phrase fits the local offer and the observed search task.
FailTranslated keywords lead to a different product or an unrelated intent.

If it fails: Revise the phrase and page outline with a qualified local reviewer.

Retest: Repeat the target-market search and check the revised page fit.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

Localize each language version

Translate the answer and the route through the site, then connect genuinely equivalent pages.

Translate the full page and its SEO fields

Give readers a coherent language experience.

Use this for: Published translated pages.

In the locale editor, review the main answer, navigation, title field, meta description, headings, image alternatives and calls to action. Have a fluent reviewer correct terminology and meaning. Leave brand names unchanged where appropriate. Translated navigation around an untranslated article is not a complete language version.

Example

Illustrative guide outline: the French page contains a French H1 for puncture repair, H2 sections for equipment and repair steps, and a French appointment link. The repair instructions are translated, not just the menu.

  1. Open the locale page and metadata fields.
  2. Translate and review the complete customer journey.
  3. Preview the published page on mobile.
More help and optional notesHigh · Local editor

Before you begin: The source content, editable locale fields and a fluent reviewer for the target language.

PassThe page fulfills its task in the intended language with accurate local terminology.
FailMain content, controls or essential instructions remain in an unintended language.

If it fails: Correct the missing locale fields and template strings.

Retest: Ask a fluent reviewer to complete the page task from entry to next step.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

Pair equivalent pages before adding hreflang

Connect alternate answers accurately.

Use this for: Page families with multiple locale versions.

Create a locale relationship for each page in your translation system or URL map. Pair versions of the same subject and purpose. A missing translation does not justify pointing every untranslated product at a foreign homepage. Leave that alternate out until a suitable version exists.

Example

Illustrative pair: an English waterproof-pannier product and its French version belong together. A general French bags category is not that product’s translated equivalent.

  1. Choose a page family.
  2. Match real translated or regional equivalents.
  3. Remove unrelated fallback pairings.
More help and optional notesHigh · SEO owner

Before you begin: Published locale URLs and access to their CMS translation relationships or equivalent URL map.

PassEvery alternate is a corresponding version of the same page purpose.
FailAlternates point to unrelated homepages, categories or missing translations.

If it fails: Correct the translation relationship before regenerating annotations.

Retest: Open all members of the page family and compare their subject and purpose.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

Use supported language and region codes

Label the intended audience correctly.

Use this for: Sites outputting hreflang annotations.

In the CMS language/market configuration, map each published locale to its actual language and optional country. Use supported values such as en-GB for UK English and fr-CA for Canadian French; UK, EU and currency codes are not substitutes. Open the public page, use View page source and search for hreflang to compare the generated value. If alternates are delivered in a sitemap or HTTP headers, ask the developer for that actual output instead.

Example

Illustrative locale map: en for general English, en-GB for UK English and fr-CA for Canadian French. Do not create hreflang="GBP" for pounds.

  1. Match each locale to its real language.
  2. Add a valid region only when needed.
  3. Check the generated codes.
More help and optional notesHigh · Developer

Before you begin: CMS language/market configuration and access to generated HTML, headers or XML sitemap.

PassCodes match the supported language-region model and actual content.
FailA country-only, currency or unsupported regional value appears.

If it fails: Correct the locale configuration and rebuild alternate output.

Retest: Read the generated annotations for every configured locale.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

Output reciprocal hreflang annotations

Make alternate relationships complete.

Use this for: Page families with equivalent locale pages.

In your CMS translation or locale-mapping screen, connect the English page to its corresponding French page and save both published relationships. If a developer maintains HTML annotations, add the same alternate set to the head of both pages: each needs its own URL and its counterpart. Use View page source and search for hreflang on both public URLs. For a header-based implementation, inspect the document request’s Link response header in the browser Network panel; for a sitemap implementation, open each page’s XML entry and compare its alternate children. Choose one maintainable method and use fully qualified target URLs.

Example

Illustrative HTML template for BOTH page heads: <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-GB" href="[absolute English product URL]"> and <link rel="alternate" hreflang="fr-CA" href="[absolute French product URL]">. Replace each bracketed placeholder with the complete HTTPS address before use. The English entry is a self-reference on English and a return link on French; the French entry works the other way around.

  1. Connect the equivalent published pages in the CMS or shared annotation template.
  2. Save and open both public source, header or sitemap outputs.
  3. Check the same self/counterpart set and final absolute targets in both outputs.
More help and optional notesHigh · Developer

Before you begin: CMS locale relationships or a shared head template; public source output and a developer for header/sitemap implementations.

PassThe chosen output contains matching, reciprocal, fully qualified alternate URLs.
FailSelf references, return links or final target addresses are missing.

If it fails: Repair the locale relationship or shared annotation generator.

Retest: Fetch the affected family again after clearing relevant caches.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

Align locale canonicals with the page strategy

Avoid contradictory duplicate signals.

Use this for: All indexable locale URLs.

Open each public locale page, use View page source and search for rel="canonical". If the site uses an HTTP canonical, inspect the document request’s Link response header in the browser Network panel. Compare that destination with the locale map, then correct the CMS SEO canonical field or shared template when it conflicts. Distinct translations should not all point to the original-language page. Choose same-language regional duplicate canonicals deliberately; Google can select a different canonical.

Example

Illustrative fault: the French repair guide declares the English guide canonical after a template copy. Correct the French template’s canonical value and check the other translated pages.

  1. Inspect declared canonicals.
  2. Compare language and duplicate purpose.
  3. Correct conflicting template rules.
More help and optional notesHigh · Developer and SEO owner

Before you begin: Public page source or document response headers, an intended locale map and the responsible SEO field/template.

PassCanonical choices match the intended language and duplicate strategy.
FailAll translations canonicalize to one source-language address without justification.

If it fails: Fix the canonical generator and consistent internal references.

Retest: Inspect live output now and Google-selected canonicals after recrawling.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Check currency, availability and locale navigation

Visitors need accurate offers and a usable way to choose another locale.

Verify the local price and availability

Keep each offer truthful from page to checkout.

Use this for: Localized commercial offers.

Open the selected market’s product or service page and follow its buying or enquiry route. Compare the displayed currency, availability, delivery area and material terms with the current operational setup. Check any product structured data and feed against the visible offer. Do not imply that a currency switch creates a separately localized page.

Example

Illustrative test: a Canadian page shows CAD and delivery to Canada. Its checkout must not silently replace that with a US-only shipping offer. Test without placing an order.

  1. Select the market explicitly.
  2. Compare page, structured data and purchase route.
  3. Correct inconsistent offer fields.
More help and optional notesHigh · Commerce operations

Before you begin: Current market catalog, currency and fulfillment rules plus access to the non-purchase checkout flow.

PassThe selected market receives accurate and consistent offer information.
FailCurrency, stock or delivery claims conflict across the journey.

If it fails: Update the catalog, locale content or feed mapping responsible for the mismatch.

Retest: Repeat the same market selection and non-purchase checkout test.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Let visitors choose their language or country

Keep all locale pages reachable.

Use this for: Sites with multiple public locales.

Add a visible language or country selector with links to the relevant page versions. Test it from a product, guide and contact page. Avoid compulsory IP-based redirection that prevents access to a requested version. A suggestion banner can offer a locale while preserving the visitor’s choice.

Example

Illustrative journey: a Canadian visitor reading a French maintenance guide can choose English and reach the corresponding guide, then switch back without a redirect loop.

  1. Add meaningful locale labels.
  2. Link equivalent pages where available.
  3. Test direct entry and switching in a fresh session.
More help and optional notesHigh · Developer

Before you begin: Published equivalent locale pages and permission to edit their navigation/locale selector.

PassEach intended locale can be opened directly and selected without a forced loop.
FailGeo or language detection makes a published version inaccessible.

If it fails: Replace forced switching with user-controlled links or an optional suggestion.

Retest: Open deep locale URLs with fresh cookies and use the selector in both directions.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

Choose a useful unmatched-language fallback

Help visitors outside supported locales.

Use this for: Sites using an x-default fallback.

If your site uses an x-default alternate, point it to a useful selector or appropriate fallback page. Keep the destination reachable and aligned with the page family. Treat x-default as a fallback annotation, not an extra language or a promise of global rankings.

Example

Illustrative store: the product’s fallback helps the visitor choose an available market; it does not automatically promise shipping to every country.

  1. Choose the unmatched-audience experience.
  2. Set or review x-default in the alternate output.
  3. Open its final destination.
More help and optional notesMedium · SEO owner

Before you begin: The existing alternate output and proposed unmatched-language destination.

PassThe fallback is real, usable and consistent with the offer.
Failx-default points to an error, unrelated destination or redirect loop.

If it fails: Correct or remove the unsupported fallback annotation.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

Run an international SEO audit checklist

Check the live output and search evidence for each market after launch or a locale change.

Check locale discovery and indexability

Find versions that cannot enter the intended search workflow.

Use this for: New or changed locale pages and existing locale investigations.

Open each locale sitemap or sitemap entry and compare priority URLs with public navigation. In Search Console URL Inspection, check a representative page from every language and template. Investigate unexpected robots blocks, noindex, redirects and canonical selections; an excluded duplicate is not automatically an error.

Example

Illustrative finding: the French service page exists in the CMS but every public menu link still opens English. Fix the French navigation and verify the page is otherwise indexable.

  1. Compare published locale URLs with navigation and sitemaps.
  2. Inspect representative intended landing pages.
  3. Separate intentional exclusions from blockers.

PassPriority locale pages are linked, retrievable and configured for their intended index state.
FailRequired pages are orphaned, blocked or redirected to another language.

If it fails: Repair the specific link, index directive or redirect rule.

Compare search performance by country and page

Spot wrong-locale visibility without guessing a cause.

Use this for: Launched locales with search data.

In Search Console Performance, select a comparable date range, filter a target country, and inspect the Pages and Queries views. Compare the intended locale with other versions of the same page. A country filter does not identify the searcher’s language. Investigate persistent mismatches alongside canonical, content and alternate checks before changing targeting.

Example

Illustrative investigation: French Canadian pages receive few Canadian impressions while English pages receive most. Check actual query language and page relevance before concluding that hreflang is broken.

  1. Filter the target country and comparable dates.
  2. Review page and query patterns.
  3. Recheck technical and content causes for important mismatches.

Retest: Repeat equivalent report filters after enough new observations accumulate.

Not applicable: The locale is not launched or has no search observations yet.

A useful result, every time

Check a task. Choose a result.

This is a manual SEO workflow. It helps you decide what to investigate and keep a usable record. It does not crawl your website or verify your answers automatically.

  1. Choose your scope. Pick the relevant task group and representative pages you are authorized to inspect.
  2. Run the stated check. Follow the steps, then choose your result. Click the square for Pass, or use the result menu for another status. You do not need to type anything.
  3. Assign the next action. Fix a problem when you can, or ask the right person for help. Optional notes can remind you what to do next. Check the result again after a fix.

What your progress means

Review progress counts passes and failures against applicable checks. Failed work still counts as reviewed. Blocked and untested checks remain unfinished. This is not an SEO score.

Untested
You have not checked this yet.
Pass
You checked it and it works as described.
Fail
You checked it and found something to fix.
Blocked
You need access, information or someone’s help.
Not applicable
This task does not apply to your website.

Export CSV downloads the checks currently shown and any optional notes. Print expands the instructions for that view. Saved results stay in this browser; there is no account sync.

Apply the workflow

What should you check when a locale is missing or underperforming?

Use the page family and the real offer to decide whether to add a translation, repair a relationship or investigate a wider site issue.

Example: one guide, three locale decisions

A hypothetical bicycle brand has an English guide used worldwide, a French translation, and a UK product offer with local shipping. The guide can use language-wide English and French targeting; the commercial page may need a UK-specific version because its offer differs. Country and language are separate decisions.

For each family, compare purpose, language, market offer and final URL. Add only real equivalents to its alternate set. This small map is more useful than assigning every country code to every page.

Can you save this international SEO checklist as a PDF?

Use the checklist’s print view and your browser’s Save as PDF option to keep the current workflow for a locale review. Notes are optional. A printed copy captures your current choices; it does not update when your website changes.

Which checklist should you use next?

Use the basic SEO checklist for the shared page-writing and site setup tasks that apply to every language. Follow the technical workflow when the problem extends beyond locale relationships.

A clear process, with honest limits.

Follow the steps, choose the result that matches what you found, and check again after changes. Notes are optional. A completed check does not guarantee indexing, traffic or rankings. How the checklists work.
