Local SEO Checklist

A local SEO checklist helps real businesses keep their profiles, website pages and public information useful to nearby customers. Start with eligibility and honest address or service-area settings, then improve contact details, services, local pages and reviews. Search visibility varies with relevance and the searcher’s location; a larger service-area setting does not guarantee broader rankings.

13 checks

Check address and service-area eligibility

Represent the business as it really operates before optimizing a profile or adding location pages.

Confirm that the business qualifies for a profile

Avoid creating an ineligible or misleading listing.

Use this for: Businesses considering or managing a Google Business Profile.

Check whether the business makes in-person contact with customers under Google’s eligibility rules. Online-only businesses and lead-generation companies are generally ineligible; particular business types have documented exceptions. Find any existing profile before creating one, and use an owner-authorized account to claim and complete the available verification process.

Example

Illustrative distinction: a mobile bicycle mechanic who visits customers may qualify as a service-area business. An online-only bicycle advice blog does not gain eligibility by renting a mailbox.

  1. Confirm the real customer-contact model.
  2. Find any existing profile and resolve ownership.
  3. Complete the offered verification steps if eligible.
More help and optional notesHigh · Business owner

Before you begin: The real customer-contact model, business owner’s authority and any existing Business Profile.

PassThe profile represents an eligible real business under authorized ownership.
FailAn online-only operation, mailbox or duplicate profile is used to manufacture a local presence.

If it fails: Use the correct existing eligible profile or stop the ineligible setup.

Retest: Check ownership and public representation after verification.

Not applicable: The business is ineligible; continue relevant website tasks without creating a profile.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

Set the real storefront or service area

Tell customers where they can actually receive service.

Use this for: Storefront, service-area and hybrid businesses.

For a business that visits customers but does not serve them at its base, hide the address from the public profile and enter the actual service areas. In Business Profile, open Edit profile → Location → Service area. Select real cities, postal codes or supported areas rather than inventing a radius. A storefront or hybrid must genuinely receive customers at the displayed location under the applicable rules.

Example

Illustrative mobile mechanic: the owner’s home remains hidden while the real towns served are listed. A rented virtual office does not become a customer-facing workshop.

  1. Choose storefront, service-area or hybrid based on operations.
  2. Correct address visibility and real service areas.
  3. Check the public location display after the edit is reviewed.

Before you begin: Verified customer-facing location/service areas and authorized profile location-setting access.

PassPublic address and service-area settings match actual customer access.
FailCustomers are sent to an unstaffed or false location, or areas exceed the real service offer.

If it fails: Correct the location fields without inventing premises.

Retest: Inspect the public profile and ask whether a customer could use it accurately.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

Complete accurate business profile information

Use the real name, relevant categories and current customer-facing details.

Use the real business name and fitting categories

Describe the business without keyword stuffing.

Use this for: Eligible managed business profiles.

Open Edit profile and check the name against the business’s real-world branding. Put service, location and hours information in their appropriate fields instead of appending it to the name. Choose the most accurate available primary category and only relevant additional categories. Category choices should describe what the business is, not every keyword it wants to rank for.

Example

Illustrative name: “Example Cycle Workshop” remains the name if that is its genuine branding; do not change it to “Best Cheap Bicycle Repair Downtown.”

  1. Check the real-world name.
  2. Select accurate available categories.
  3. Save and review the public result.
More help and optional notesHigh · Business owner

Before you begin: Actual business branding, real services and authorized Edit profile access.

PassThe name and categories accurately represent the actual business.
FailPromotional phrases or unrelated categories misrepresent it.

If it fails: Remove unsupported name additions and irrelevant categories.

Retest: Compare the public fields with real signage and services.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

Keep regular and special hours accurate

Avoid sending customers to a closed business.

Use this for: Businesses whose profile type supports hours.

In Edit profile, review the hours fields and upcoming special hours. Match customer-facing availability, not the hours someone happens to answer email. Apply the rules for your business type; appointment-only businesses and some other categories should not publish ordinary opening hours in the same way as a walk-in shop. Update the website when availability changes.

Example

Illustrative workshop: Saturday walk-in hours differ from weekday hours, and a holiday closure gets a special-hours entry rather than a misleading “open as usual” listing.

  1. Confirm actual customer access with the team.
  2. Edit regular and relevant special hours.
  3. Compare the website and public profile.

Before you begin: Confirmed customer-facing regular, seasonal and special-day availability.

PassCustomers see consistent and accurate availability.
FailA holiday, appointment-only service or seasonal change is misrepresented.

If it fails: Correct the appropriate hours fields and website text.

Connect the profile to the right phone and landing page

Make the next step work for this location.

Use this for: Managed profiles with contact and website fields.

Check the business-controlled phone number and website field in Edit profile. Use the real page for that business or branch, then open the public link on a phone. Test that the page explains the correct services and has a usable call or enquiry route. A multi-location profile should not send customers to a misleading unrelated branch.

Example

Illustrative branch: the north workshop profile opens its own location page with its hours and contact details. The call button does not route to a closed former tenant.

  1. Confirm the controlled phone and intended landing page.
  2. Update the profile fields.
  3. Open the public links and test the route without submitting a real booking.
More help and optional notesHigh · Business owner

Before you begin: Business-controlled phone details, the correct branch website and profile editing access.

PassProfile links and contact details lead to the intended real business.
FailA stale phone, error page or wrong branch interrupts the journey.

If it fails: Correct the field and any destination-page problem.

Retest: Retest the public phone/link destination after the update.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

Add truthful photos and available service details

Help people recognize the business and its offer.

Use this for: Eligible profiles with relevant photo/service features.

Use the profile’s photo and service controls to add current images you have the right to use and accurate services where the category supports them. Show the actual entrance, workspace or work performed, as appropriate. Avoid stock imagery that falsely represents premises, invented staff or unsupported credentials. Obtain permission before displaying identifiable customers.

Example

Illustrative storefront photo: the real entrance and visible sign help visitors find the door. A service-area mechanic can show their actual tools and work rather than an invented shopfront.

  1. Choose current truthful images and service details.
  2. Upload or edit the supported profile fields.
  3. Review the public display and remove obsolete material.
More help and optional notesMedium · Business owner

Before you begin: Current images you may publish, verified services and any needed customer consent.

PassPhotos and services match the actual business.
FailImagery or service claims create a false impression of facilities or qualifications.

If it fails: Replace misleading material with accurate information.

Retest: Compare the public profile with current operations.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

Make the local website genuinely useful

Explain the services, access and local details that customers need before contacting the business.

Write a clear service page with natural local language

Answer the local customer’s actual need.

Use this for: Local service pages.

In the website editor, describe the service, who it suits, important limits and how to enquire. Set the SEO title and visible main heading to reflect the real service and area where relevant. Use supporting headings to answer useful questions rather than repeating a city name in every line.

Example

Illustrative title: “Mobile Bicycle Repair in Bristol | Example Workshop,” only for a business that really serves Bristol. H2 sections can explain “Repairs we handle,” “Areas we visit” and “How appointments work.”

  1. Confirm the real service and coverage.
  2. Write the opening, useful sections and enquiry step.
  3. Edit the SEO title and inspect the published page.
More help and optional notesHigh · Website editor

Before you begin: Actual service/coverage facts and access to the website’s content and SEO title fields.

PassThe page answers the service need with truthful local context.
FailKeyword repetition replaces useful detail or claims unsupported local availability.

If it fails: Add real service information and remove invented local claims.

Retest: Read the page as a customer and test its contact route.

Create a useful page for each real customer-facing location

Help customers choose and reach the correct branch.

Use this for: Businesses with real locations or useful service-coverage information.

Give each genuine location a page when it helps visitors find that branch. Include its actual contact details, customer-facing hours, services and useful access information such as entrance or parking, when verified. Link it from the location finder or navigation. Service-area businesses can explain coverage without publishing a private home address.

Example

Illustrative branch difference: one workshop repairs cargo bikes and has step-free access, while another does not. The pages should explain those real differences rather than swap the neighborhood name in the same paragraph.

  1. Gather branch-specific verified details.
  2. Publish the useful location information.
  3. Link the page and test it at phone width.
More help and optional notesHigh · Local content editor

Before you begin: Verified branch details or genuine service-coverage information and website editing access.

PassEach location page helps a visitor use that real location.
FailPages imply nonexistent branches or contain only keyword-swapped city text.

If it fails: Correct the branch facts or consolidate unnecessary location pages.

Represent genuine coverage across multiple cities

Expand local content only when the business and the information support it.

Choose useful city coverage without inventing branches

Match pages and profiles to actual operations.

Use this for: Businesses serving multiple cities or proposing city pages.

Review each proposed city page against real service availability and information a customer in that city needs. A single coverage page may answer several areas well. Create a separate page only when you can add genuinely useful local details. Do not create additional Business Profiles for every served city without separately eligible real operations.

Example

Illustrative decision: a mobile mechanic serves three neighboring towns from one base. One detailed coverage page may be sufficient; three fake office listings are not justified.

  1. Verify actual availability in each area.
  2. Choose shared coverage or a genuinely distinct page.
  3. Check that profile count follows real eligibility.
More help and optional notesHigh · Business owner and SEO lead

Before you begin: Real operational coverage by city and the current page/profile inventory.

PassCoverage content is truthful and useful without manufactured locations.
FailA city-name swap or fictitious branch is the only reason a page or profile exists.

If it fails: Consolidate thin coverage pages and correct false location claims.

Retest: Review the customer value and operational facts for every retained area.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

Maintain listings and earn genuine reviews

Correct important public information and make honest feedback easy.

Correct inaccurate business listings that customers use

Reduce conflicting contact and location information.

Use this for: Businesses with third-party directory listings.

Search the real business name, phone number and any previous public address. Review important local or industry directories where customers encounter the business. Correct stale phone, hours, website and permitted address details through the listing’s official management process. Choose relevant listings rather than buying a fixed-size directory package; do not expose a private service-area address merely to make every listing look identical.

Example

Illustrative correction: a trade directory still links to the former workshop address. Update the real listing instead of creating a second one.

  1. Find material existing listings.
  2. Compare them with the current business facts.
  3. Correct inaccuracies and duplicate entries through official controls.
More help and optional notesMedium · Business owner

Before you begin: Current authoritative business facts and access to relevant existing listing-management accounts.

PassImportant listings direct customers to accurate business information.
FailConflicting listings send customers to old or false contact details.

If it fails: Update the authoritative listing and follow its normal duplicate-resolution process.

Retest: Reopen the public listings after their changes are processed.

Not applicable: The page type or feature described is not used on this site.

Optional: affected URL, change made and next check. Keep confidential data out of shared exports.

Ask real customers for honest reviews

Build a fair feedback process.

Use this for: Businesses inviting Google reviews.

Use the profile’s review-sharing link or QR code and offer it to genuine customers without selecting only those who seem happy. Keep the request neutral. Do not buy reviews, reward them with discounts, pressure customers for a rating, or require specific keywords. Check other review platforms’ solicitation rules separately before reusing the same workflow.

Example

Illustrative request: “If you’d like to share your experience, you can leave a review using this link.” Do not replace it with “Give us five stars and mention bicycle repair for a discount.”

  1. Get the correct review link.
  2. Use a neutral request for genuine customers.
  3. Remove incentives, rating pressure and positive-only screening.

Reply helpfully without exposing customer information

Address feedback while protecting privacy.

Use this for: Businesses receiving public reviews.

Review incoming feedback in the profile’s review controls. Thank people when useful and answer specific issues calmly. Keep private order, health, address and contact details out of public replies; move complex discussion to an appropriate private channel. Report genuine policy violations through the platform rather than promising removal of any negative review.

Example

Illustrative reply: “Please contact the workshop so we can look into the appointment.” Do not publish the customer’s address or repair invoice to argue your case.

  1. Read the review and verified context.
  2. Write a relevant privacy-safe reply.
  3. Use the report function only for an actual policy concern.

PassReplies are accurate, useful and free of private customer information.
FailA reply becomes an attack, exposes records or offers a reward to change a review.

If it fails: Revise the response and handle sensitive details privately.

Check local outcomes and changing details

Monitor customer-facing accuracy and meaningful interactions without treating one search as a fixed ranking.

Compare profile interactions and website search results

See what needs attention after changes.

Use this for: Verified profiles and websites with performance data.

Open Business Profile Performance for a comparable date range and inspect the available interactions. Use Search Console separately to review relevant landing pages and queries. A call-button click does not prove a completed call or sale, and profile performance can include ad-related data. Local search varies by location; one search from your office is not a complete market ranking report.

Example

Illustrative interpretation: more call-button clicks with fewer actual enquiries prompts a phone-routing check. It does not automatically prove that the profile produced more customers.

  1. Compare equivalent reporting periods.
  2. Review the relevant profile interactions and website pages.
  3. Check business changes and verify any broken customer route.

A useful result, every time

Check a task. Choose a result.

This is a manual SEO workflow. It helps you decide what to investigate and keep a usable record. It does not crawl your website or verify your answers automatically.

  1. Choose your scope. Pick the relevant task group and representative pages you are authorized to inspect.
  2. Run the stated check. Follow the steps, then choose your result. Click the square for Pass, or use the result menu for another status. You do not need to type anything.
  3. Assign the next action. Fix a problem when you can, or ask the right person for help. Optional notes can remind you what to do next. Check the result again after a fix.

What your progress means

Review progress counts passes and failures against applicable checks. Failed work still counts as reviewed. Blocked and untested checks remain unfinished. This is not an SEO score.

Untested

Pass
You checked it and it works as described.
Fail
You checked it and found something to fix.
Blocked

Export CSV downloads the checks currently shown and any optional notes. Print expands the instructions for that view. Saved results stay in this browser; there is no account sync.

Apply the workflow

How should local SEO change when you do not have a public storefront?

Keep the business model and customer access truthful, then choose the profile and website details that help people use the service.

Example: a mobile service without a walk-in address

A hypothetical bicycle mechanic visits customers in several nearby towns and does not receive customers at home. If eligible, the business uses the correct service-area profile setup, hides the non-customer-facing address and describes genuine coverage on its website.

Its service page can explain booking, travel limits and repairs handled. It should not show a fabricated workshop photograph, rented mailbox location or invented town office.

Should you add LocalBusiness structured data?

Use suitable structured data on your actual business website only when the required facts can be represented accurately. Configure it in the CMS integration or template, compare it with visible business information and test the public URL in the Rich Results Test. A private home address should not be exposed just to satisfy a rich-result requirement.

Do not invent a public location, opening hours or ratings. Eligibility for a search feature has its own requirements, and valid markup does not guarantee display. This checklist page itself is an editorial resource, not a listing for your business.

Build on the local SEO foundation

Use the basic SEO checklist for shared website setup and page-writing tasks. Use the content checklist to improve the real service information customers need.

A clear process, with honest limits.

Follow the steps, choose the result that matches what you found, and check again after changes. Notes are optional. A completed check does not guarantee indexing, traffic or rankings. How the checklists work.
