Link Building Checklist

This link building checklist takes you from a useful destination page to a relevant publisher, a specific outreach message and a checked live link. Work on a small, qualified campaign rather than buying a list or chasing a backlink quota. The publisher decides whether a link helps its readers. Notes are optional, and no step guarantees a link or ranking increase.

Choose a Useful Target Page and Audience

A link request needs a credible reason for another publisher to recommend the destination. Choose the resource and its reader benefit before collecting contacts. A page being commercially important to you is not enough reason for someone else to link to it.

Find and Qualify Relevant Link Prospects

A prospect is a specific publication or page whose readers could use your resource. Search for the subject and inspect the page itself. Third-party authority and traffic estimates may help organize research, but neither proves editorial quality nor sets a universal eligibility threshold.

Write a Specific and Honest Link Request

A useful pitch names the relevant source page, explains the reader benefit and leaves the decision with the publisher. Keep it short enough to understand without making a rigid word count the goal. Avoid fake praise, invented familiarity and pressure to use a prescribed keyword anchor.

Verify Live Links and Review Campaign Quality

After a publication responds, check the real page and destination. Judge the campaign by relevant coverage and useful referrals, not a promised number of links or a vendor metric. Links can change later, so keep important destinations working.

Reset this checklist?

This removes saved statuses, evidence and result dates for the checks on this page. Other checklists keep their records. Export a CSV first if you need a copy.

A useful result, every time

Check a task. Choose a result.

This is a manual SEO workflow. It helps you decide what to investigate and keep a usable record. It does not crawl your website or verify your answers automatically.

  1. Choose your scope. Pick the relevant task group and representative pages you are authorized to inspect.
  2. Run the stated check. Follow the steps, then choose your result. Click the square for Pass, or use the result menu for another status. You do not need to type anything.
  3. Assign the next action. Fix a problem when you can, or ask the right person for help. Optional notes can remind you what to do next. Check the result again after a fix.

What your progress means

Review progress counts passes and failures against applicable checks. Failed work still counts as reviewed. Blocked and untested checks remain unfinished. This is not an SEO score.

Untested
You have not checked this yet.
Pass
You checked it and it works as described.
Fail
You checked it and found something to fix.
Blocked
You need access, information or someone’s help.
Not applicable
This task does not apply to your website.

Export CSV downloads the checks currently shown and any optional notes. Print expands the instructions for that view. Saved results stay in this browser; there is no account sync.

Apply the workflow

How should you judge a link campaign after the replies arrive?

Review reader fit, accurate live links and useful referrals, then improve the resource or targeting before increasing outreach.

Example: Accept One Prospect and Reject Another

Illustrative comparison: a specialist maintenance guide includes a section your original diagram can explain more clearly. Its editor accepts relevant suggestions and controls the final wording. That is a reasonable prospect to investigate.

A second site offers an exact-match link in any article for a fee while insisting the payment stay hidden. Its score does not change the policy problem. Reject that arrangement rather than treating the two prospects as interchangeable backlink counts.

How Many Backlinks Do You Need?

There is no universal link quota that guarantees a position. Competitor link counts can inform research, but they do not isolate content quality, intent, reputation and the many other differences between pages.

Choose a campaign you can run carefully and judge the actual reader fit. Do not prescribe keyword-anchor percentages or reject every qualified link because it does not promise ranking credit.

Keep the Wider Off-Page Plan Connected

A link campaign is one part of external discovery. Business-profile corrections, genuine customer feedback and relevant community contributions may be more appropriate than outreach for a particular problem.

A clear process, with honest limits.

Follow the steps, choose the result that matches what you found, and check again after changes. Notes are optional. A completed check does not guarantee indexing, traffic or rankings. How the checklists work.
