Practical SEO checklist

Off-Page SEO Checklist

Use this off-page SEO checklist to improve how people discover and understand your website beyond its own pages. Review relevant links and mentions, correct inaccurate business information, encourage genuine feedback and choose useful content to share. Start with the audiences and publishers that matter to your work. Social counts and third-party authority scores are not a substitute for relevance.

Choose Relevant Off-Page SEO Opportunities

An off-page plan starts with where your audience already looks for trustworthy information. Decide what a useful referral or mention would help a person do, then choose a small set of suitable channels. Avoid collecting profiles or links simply because a tool can count them.

Choose the audiences and channels worth reaching

Selected channels fit a real audience and contribution.

Use this for: Any off-page plan.

List the people your site helps and the places they actually use to learn, compare or find providers. Review a relevant trade publication, community or directory before adding it to your plan. Describe the useful contribution you can make there. An online reference site and a local service business do not need the same off-page channels.

Example

A maintenance checklist may suit a relevant trade newsletter; a local repair service may need accurate business listings and customer reviews.

  1. Name the intended audience.
  2. Inspect relevant publications or communities.
  3. Choose channels with a clear reader benefit.

Prepare the page people will reach

The destination fulfills the promotion’s actual promise.

Use this for: Pages selected for promotion.

Open the proposed destination on desktop and mobile. Make sure it provides the promised resource, service details or next action before promoting it. Fix a broken download, missing explanation or obstructed contact route first. Promotion should take readers to something useful, not an unfinished placeholder.

Example

Share a working checklist with clear instructions rather than a page that only says the checklist is coming soon.

  1. Open the destination as a visitor.
  2. Try its promised resource or action safely.
  3. Fix missing or broken essentials.

Review who already links to the website

The starting link picture is understood with its reporting limits.

Use this for: Sites with verified Search Console access.

In Search Console, open Links and review External links, Top linked pages and Top linking sites. Open representative linking pages to understand their context. The report is a sample and may include links that have changed; it does not label nofollow. Use it to find useful relationships and broken destinations rather than infer a complete ranking score.

Example

A trade association already linking to an old service address may offer a practical correction opportunity.

  1. Open the Links report.
  2. Inspect representative source and destination pages.
  3. Separate useful relationships from unexplained numbers.

Keep Business Information and Reviews Accurate

Accurate profiles and genuine feedback help people judge whether a website or business fits their needs. Apply these checks only to services you actually use and profiles you are eligible to maintain. Never invent locations, qualifications or customer experiences.

Correct the details on relevant existing profiles

Relevant profiles accurately represent the real entity.

Use this for: Businesses or resources with relevant external profiles.

Open each profile’s own edit controls and compare its business name, website, contact details, service area and hours with current facts. Update outdated details and remove services no longer offered. Claim or manage profiles only when eligible and authorized; an online-only information resource should not invent a storefront to obtain a local listing.

Example

A changed contact number should be corrected on the actual industry directory and business profile used by customers.

  1. Choose relevant existing profiles.
  2. Compare their details with current facts.
  3. Correct inaccuracies through the proper account.

Ask genuine customers for honest feedback

Review requests seek genuine, unbiased feedback.

Use this for: Businesses eligible for and using a review platform.

Use the review platform’s allowed request method after a real customer experience. For Google reviews, share the business’s review link or QR code without discounts, rewards or a demand for a positive rating. Apply the request fairly rather than directing only happy customers to public reviews. Check the platform’s current policy before launching a program.

Example

A neutral request says feedback helps future customers understand the service; it does not offer a reward for five stars.

  1. Choose an appropriate genuine customer moment.
  2. Use the platform’s permitted request route.
  3. Keep requests neutral and free of incentives.

FailReviews are invented, incentivized or filtered to hide negative experiences.

Respond to feedback without exposing private details

The response is useful, factual and privacy-conscious.

Use this for: Profiles receiving customer feedback.

Open the platform’s review management area and write a specific, calm response. Acknowledge the issue you can address, explain an appropriate next step and move private account matters to a suitable direct channel. Do not publish customer records, argue about sensitive facts or make promises the business cannot fulfill.

Example

A reply can invite the customer to contact the service team with their reference number privately, rather than repeating that number publicly.

  1. Read the review and verify the relevant facts.
  2. Write a helpful public response.
  3. Keep personal details out of the reply.

Check important brand mentions for factual errors

Material inaccuracies are identified and corrected or awaiting a clear request.

Use this for: Sites or businesses mentioned elsewhere.

Search the real brand name and review relevant publication or directory mentions. Confirm that a similarly named entity is not being confused with yours. Where a material fact is wrong, use the publisher’s correction or contact route with a concise explanation and supporting information. A mention does not have to become a link to be useful.

Example

A directory attributing the wrong service area needs a factual correction; an accurate interview mentioning the brand without a link may still serve readers.

  1. Find relevant mentions of the real entity.
  2. Verify identity and the stated facts.
  3. Request justified corrections through the publisher.

Earn Attention With Useful Contributions

Choose an asset or contribution that another audience can genuinely use. A publication retains editorial control over what it includes. Avoid paid ranking links, repetitive guest posts and manufactured expertise; a relevant sponsored campaign is a separate marketing decision with appropriate qualification.

Choose a resource worth sharing

The resource gives the target reader a genuine reason to use it.

Use this for: Plans involving content promotion.

Identify a useful checklist, original explanation, tool, dataset or example you can maintain. Check its accuracy, permissions and accessibility before sharing it. Explain the concrete question it answers for the intended audience. Do not call a repackaged claim original research or invent results to make a resource seem newsworthy.

Example

An original troubleshooting decision table may be useful to a specialist newsletter if its advice is verified and its limits are clear.

  1. Choose a specific audience question.
  2. Prepare a working, accurate resource.
  3. Describe the benefit without inflated claims.

Prepare factual material for an appropriate publisher

The pitch material is accurate and appropriate to the outlet.

Use this for: Genuine editorial or public-relations opportunities.

For a real announcement or subject contribution, prepare the facts a journalist or editor needs: what happened, when, who can answer questions and the supporting material. Use the outlet’s published submission process. Be honest about the contributor’s experience and commercial connection; do not manufacture a news event or impersonate an independent customer.

Example

A qualified employee can explain a real project method without inventing client outcomes or calling an advertisement independent coverage.

  1. Confirm the actual news or useful contribution.
  2. Prepare supporting facts and a suitable contact.
  3. Follow the outlet’s editorial process.

Contribute where the community permits it

The contribution serves the discussion and follows its rules.

Use this for: Participation in external communities.

Read a community’s rules and recent discussions before posting. Answer the actual question in useful language and disclose your connection when relevant. Include a link only when it adds needed context and the rules allow it. Repeating the same promotional answer across discussions can harm the experience and resemble link spam.

Example

A concise explanation of a maintenance step can stand alone; a related checklist link is optional when it genuinely helps the reader.

  1. Read the community rules and question.
  2. Write a helpful, relevant contribution.
  3. Disclose your relationship and avoid repetitive promotion.

Separate sponsored promotion from earned editorial links

Commercial promotion is transparently qualified.

Use this for: Paid or commercially exchanged placements.

Before paying for placement, establish the real marketing purpose and ensure the publisher will qualify paid links appropriately, usually with sponsored or nofollow. Do not buy links that promise to pass ranking credit or demand a particular keyword anchor. An honest sponsorship can reach readers without pretending to be independent editorial endorsement.

Example

A disclosed newsletter sponsorship is different from paying for an undisclosed exact-match link in an unrelated article.

  1. Identify any payment or commercial exchange.
  2. Confirm truthful disclosure and link qualification.
  3. Reject promises of purchased ranking credit.

Review Results and Handle Link Risks Carefully

Review actual referrals, useful conversations and relevant coverage alongside search observations. Third-party link scores can help sort research, but they are not Google’s own scores. Investigate a real issue before trying to remove large sets of links.

Repair important destinations reached from external links

Important referrals reach the intended useful destination.

Use this for: Existing external links to moved or broken content.

Follow a relevant external link to your site. If the destination broke accidentally, restore the intended resource or use a suitable redirect when it genuinely moved. If the content is permanently gone without a relevant replacement, a proper not-found response may be correct. Do not redirect every old address to the homepage.

Example

An old checklist download can redirect to its real replacement; an unrelated discontinued offer should not point to a random service page.

  1. Open the linking page and follow the link.
  2. Identify the destination’s intended outcome.
  3. Restore or redirect only when appropriate.

Investigate link concerns without routine disavow

The response is based on actual evidence and the tool’s intended conditions.

Use this for: Sites with suspected manipulative-link issues.

If a tool flags links, inspect the context and check Search Console’s Manual actions report before concluding there is a penalty. Google says most sites do not need the disavow tool. It is an advanced option for substantial artificial links associated with a manual action or likely manual action, and misuse can harm performance. In that genuine case, attempt justified removal first and seek qualified help before disavowing.

Example

A vendor’s toxicity score alone does not establish a manual action or justify uploading a disavow file.

  1. Inspect the actual link concern.
  2. Check reported manual actions and known past link schemes.
  3. Escalate only a supported advanced-remediation case.

Compare useful outcomes before repeating a channel

The next decision reflects relevant outcomes and measurement limits.

Use this for: Off-page work with results available to review.

Review referrals and relevant inquiries where measurement is available, plus the accuracy and longevity of important mentions. Compare similar periods and keep campaign changes in context. Choose the next activity because it reached suitable readers or created a useful relationship, not because a dashboard’s authority score rose. Search changes can have multiple causes.

Example

A small specialist newsletter bringing appropriate readers may deserve attention even when a broad social post receives more likes.

  1. Review meaningful outcomes for each channel.
  2. Compare like-for-like observations.
  3. Repeat or change the activity for a clear reason.

A useful result, every time

Check a task. Choose a result.

This is a manual SEO workflow. It helps you decide what to investigate and keep a usable record. It does not crawl your website or verify your answers automatically.

  1. Choose your scope. Pick the relevant task group and representative pages you are authorized to inspect.
  2. Run the stated check. Follow the steps, then choose your result. Click the square for Pass, or use the result menu for another status. You do not need to type anything.
  3. Assign the next action. Fix a problem when you can, or ask the right person for help. Optional notes can remind you what to do next. Check the result again after a fix.

What your progress means

Review progress counts passes and failures against applicable checks. Failed work still counts as reviewed. Blocked and untested checks remain unfinished. This is not an SEO score.

Untested
You have not checked this yet.
Pass
You checked it and it works as described.
Fail
You checked it and found something to fix.
Blocked
You need access, information or someone’s help.
Not applicable
This task does not apply to your website.

Export CSV downloads the checks currently shown and any optional notes. Print expands the instructions for that view. Saved results stay in this browser; there is no account sync.

Apply the workflow

When should you move from off-page planning to link outreach?

Move to outreach when you have a useful resource and a relevant publisher whose readers could benefit from it.

Example: Choose a Useful Channel, Not the Largest Number

Illustrative situation: a repair business finds an inaccurate directory entry, a relevant trade newsletter and an unrelated paid-link offer. Correct the directory facts first. Offer the newsletter a useful verified maintenance resource if it suits the editor’s audience. Reject the offer that sells ranking credit.

The three opportunities require different actions. Treating them all as “get more backlinks” would hide the correction, the editorial choice and the policy risk.

Check the Website Before Sending More Visitors

External attention cannot repair a broken resource or misleading service page. Review the destination’s access, main answer and intended action before increasing promotion.

A clear process, with honest limits.

Follow the steps, choose the result that matches what you found, and check again after changes. Notes are optional. A completed check does not guarantee indexing, traffic or rankings. How the checklists work.
